Students from Cambridge House British International School travel to Lourdes to volunteer with the charity HCPT.

Since 2011, British International School Cambridge House, has been travelling to Lourdes in the South of France with the charity organisation HCPT. The Cambridge House Youth Group consists of volunteer Year 12 and 13 students who give up a week of their Easter holidays to make the journey to Lourdes with three of their teachers.

Once there, the students work with groups from all over the UK to help look after special children with a multitude of needs.

This year 30 students took part in the initiative, spending a week caring for others, whilst learning a lot about themselves. The students sang, danced and entertained the children, helping care for them whilst they were away from home and their families. They helped the children express themselves, to accept themselves and to enjoy themselves.

“The students were amazing and worked extremely hard. They brought energy and joy to the groups they were paired with, and I received nothing but praise from everybody they met and worked with during the week. They showed love, happiness, enjoyment and empathy. I’m extremely proud!” Katie – Group leader.

“It was amazing! I have learnt how to adapt myself to different situations, about trust, and the children taught me how to be grateful for what I have. I have made good friends and I know I left a mark on their lives as much as they left a mark on mine”. - Year 13 member of the Youth Group.

Well done to all the students involved, who not only showed passion and willingness to care for others, but who also further developed key values such as teamwork and solidarity.

What a wonderful experience, getting to know oneself outside of the classroom. Helping to change the world for these children, something that will stay with our students for the rest of their lives.
